STUNNING & RARE GENUINE 1800's ANTIQUE BERLIN IRON SIGNET RING 'JY' INITIALS

Description

During the Napoleonic Wars, wealthy people gave their jewellery to the impoverished Prussian state to help finance the war effort. They were compensated with iron copies of their lost treasures and wore these with patriotic pride. This amazing large size and heavy solid iron signet ring dates from this period, around the early 1800’s. It has a shield-shaped bezeled seal head superbly engraved with the initials ‘JY’ or similar in blackletter and is a wonderfully wearable size 12.
But in my opinion the best feature of this very special piece is the shoulders and band: a high rounded D-section, with breathtaking chased rococo foliage running all the way around the gently tapering body. I’ve rarely seen such deep, strongly 3d relief with this level of fine detail that’s in such good condition it looks natural rather than crafted from a solid piece of metal.

It dates from around 1820 and is in excellent, fully wearable condition throughout, with no loss or damage. It weighs 9.5 grams, measures nearly 13 mm across the head, and its ring size is 12 US / Y UK - not resizeable.
